Week 10 Blog Post

  1. What did you do in lab today?
    1. This week in lab we got to discuss the investigate the different types of rocks and how they are made. We got to use starbust and a small blow torch to form and shape the different rocks. The picture below shows the different rocks we made and two of the rocks at different stages of theri formation. We also talk a lot about our exam that we jsut took and went over those ideas as well.

  2. What was the main lab question?
    1. How are rocks formed?
  3. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion?
    1.  This week in lecture, I learned about plate tectonics, and how pangea happened. The idea of pangea shows the reason while plate tectonics conintue to move. We also learned about ridges and how the ridges tell us how old it would be on the coastline.
  4. Online Textbook:
    1. What did you learn?
      1. Something that I learned was the was about geode. geode forms when a cavity forms in a rock, which can occur in different ways. I didn't what this event was or that it was something that could helpful so this is something that I had learned through the pressbook.
    2. What was most helpful?
      1. One thing that was most helpful that whole process of the rock process. I had no idea how rocks were created and formed or what was techinaly considered a rock. The key processes in the rock cycle are heat & pressure and weathering & erosion, which is also something I never knew helpful for me to understand.
    3. What do you need more information on?
      1. One thing I need more imformation on is Archimedes’ principle becaue I am not really sure I understand it. In the pressbook it says that the Archimedes’ principle says that the weight of the displaced liquid is equal to the weight of the object. I am not sure how this related to rocks though.
  5. What questions, concerens, and/or comments do you have?
    1. How do we know if soemthing is a rock?
    2. Why are there different types of rocks?
