Week 6 Elementary Science

  1. What did you do in lab today?
    1. In lab this week we got to investigate different ideas about the Earth and things that happen becuase of the Earth's rotation. We got to investigate why seasons happen and got to work with our partners to figure out the answer to why seasons happen. We also got to investigate why lunar eclipse happen. My group got to use the moon and Earth that was provded and we got to relearn about the difference between solar and lunar eclipse. I thought it was really fun learning and being hands-on in class. 
  2. What was the big question?
    1. The big questions were, how the phases of the moon occur, what causes the seasons, and what causes a lunar eclipse?
  3. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion?
    1. In lecture on Thursday, we talked about the moon phases and we had multiple questions about what part of the moon would you see if it was a certain time during the day. I was very confused at first and then after discussing this idea, it was started to make more sense to me.

    1. What did you learn?
      1. One thing I learned was the history behind how we figuired out how the Earth rotates around the sun, and the fact that the Earth rotates around the sun. Learning about the moon faces and the way we see them throughout the Earth. Lastly, learning about the seasons and solstace and equiniox was something new for me. 
    2. What was most helpful?
      1. The most helpful thing was the idea about the seasons. I was never sure why season happened and I think that this was really helpful to understand these ideas. The video helped me understand more. The tilt of the Earth is the basis of why we have seasons, which is soemthing I did not know. 
    3. What do you need more information on?
      1. I want to learn more about the history on how we found out the Earth revolves around the sun. I think the history behind this idea is facinating and I was never really taught the indepth idea of this and I think that it would be something really cool to learn more about it. 
  5. What questions, concerens, and/or comments do you have?
    1. I think this topic is very interesting so I think its going to be interesting learning more about astronomy.

Week 13 Blog Post

 This week was really interesting to me. We got to really dive deep into the M&M experiment we tried last week and got to change different variables. It was also interesting to hear about the other tables because we all got to experiment with different ideas and use different ways to find them. One thing that I learned was the capture of the water influenced how fast the colors bled. Overall, the orange M&M bled the fastest while the blue bled the slowest. It was also interesting to see that the sugar water made the colors bleed very slowly and contained around the M&M, while the waters with no sugar bled and spread. Overall, I thought this activity was really fun and interesting to complete and think about. I think this would be a great activity to complete in an elementary classroom to get them to start thinking about ideas like this one.

Week 8 Blog Post

 This week in class, we learned about the ideas of DNA and RNA. In this topic, we learned the differences between the four bonds within. For example, in DNA the four bonds are A and T and then C and G. In RNA there is no T, so the letters are A and U and then C and G. This is how the strands work. We also learned about mutations and how they can affect the DNA strand and also how a mutation works in a DNA strand. This was really interesting to learn about and can benefit my future students because it will help them also understand the way they look. Lastly, once again, we looked at our plant and got to see the growth of our plant. Unfortunately, it is getting very dry and starting to die a little. Overall, I enjoyed learning about DNA and RNA this week.  Our plant from this week!

Week 11 Blog Post

 During this week's class, we got to explore many different hands-on labs. The main point of this activity was to discover the why. Many young students want to know why, but we don't know how to explain it. We can understand what is happening and why it's happening, but how do you explain this to someone who doesn't understand. I think that this was a really interesting way to explore this idea. We discovered so many different things during this activity. The most interesting one was the baking soda and vinegar. We knew as older students what was going to happen, but we were not sure how it happened. I think that doing these experiment help us learn how to teach ideas like these, but also can help students in the classroom ask question and be curious during experienmenting. Asking question is a good way for studetns to learn and start to understand they why of things happening. Here is two of the different acitivites that we did!   Ice melting ^^^ Plunger Push ^^^
