Week 11 Blog Post

 

  1. What did you do in lab today?
    1. This week in lab, we got to discuss about the layers of rocks and how to tell how old the rocks are. We also got to investiagate rocks and guess which rock was made in the different ways, weather it was water, glacier, or wind. I thought this was really interesting becaues I have never gotten to do something like this. 





  1. What was the main lab question?
    1. What is climate? What is the older part of a rock structure?
  2. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion?
    1. In lecture this week, we got to discuss gold and how people learned about gold. Gold is the heaviest thing so it would sink to the bottom of the water. It was also interestign guessign whever the soda would sink or float.

    1. What did you learn?
      1. Something that I learned was that the tempature of the ocean can affect the tempature of the the air that passes over it. This was really interesting to me becuase this is soemthing that I didn't and also would like to learn more information about these ideas. 
    2. What was most helpful?
      1. Soemthing that was the most helpful thing was the defintion of climate and weather because I didn't know the difference or the defintion of them. The defintion of climate is  the usual weather activity that can be expected for an area and time of year. The defintion of weather is the short-term atmospheric conditions in an area.
    3. What do you need more information on?
      1. Something I need more information on is the W in the L.O.W.E.R. acrynoym. The wind and mass is somethng that I didn't know was apart of these ideas, so it would be something that I deifnitly would like to learn more about. 
  4. What questions, concerens, and/or comments do you have?
    1. Are these the only factors or can there be more?

Week 13 Blog Post

 This week was really interesting to me. We got to really dive deep into the M&M experiment we tried last week and got to change different variables. It was also interesting to hear about the other tables because we all got to experiment with different ideas and use different ways to find them. One thing that I learned was the capture of the water influenced how fast the colors bled. Overall, the orange M&M bled the fastest while the blue bled the slowest. It was also interesting to see that the sugar water made the colors bleed very slowly and contained around the M&M, while the waters with no sugar bled and spread. Overall, I thought this activity was really fun and interesting to complete and think about. I think this would be a great activity to complete in an elementary classroom to get them to start thinking about ideas like this one.

Week 8 Blog Post

 This week in class, we learned about the ideas of DNA and RNA. In this topic, we learned the differences between the four bonds within. For example, in DNA the four bonds are A and T and then C and G. In RNA there is no T, so the letters are A and U and then C and G. This is how the strands work. We also learned about mutations and how they can affect the DNA strand and also how a mutation works in a DNA strand. This was really interesting to learn about and can benefit my future students because it will help them also understand the way they look. Lastly, once again, we looked at our plant and got to see the growth of our plant. Unfortunately, it is getting very dry and starting to die a little. Overall, I enjoyed learning about DNA and RNA this week.  Our plant from this week!

Week 11 Blog Post

 During this week's class, we got to explore many different hands-on labs. The main point of this activity was to discover the why. Many young students want to know why, but we don't know how to explain it. We can understand what is happening and why it's happening, but how do you explain this to someone who doesn't understand. I think that this was a really interesting way to explore this idea. We discovered so many different things during this activity. The most interesting one was the baking soda and vinegar. We knew as older students what was going to happen, but we were not sure how it happened. I think that doing these experiment help us learn how to teach ideas like these, but also can help students in the classroom ask question and be curious during experienmenting. Asking question is a good way for studetns to learn and start to understand they why of things happening. Here is two of the different acitivites that we did!   Ice melting ^^^ Plunger Push ^^^
